Conference Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the failure rates, contraindications, potential side effects, non-contraceptive benefits, and complications of current contraceptive methods.
  • Identify key counseling strategies and anticipatory guidance that may assist patients when selecting sterilization as a contraceptive method.
  • Describe one behavioral counseling intervention that has been used successfully in STD/HIV risk reduction counseling.
  • Identify health indicators that link to birth outcomes which clinicians can address with both female and male clients before, during and between pregnancy.
  • Discuss the links between PCOS and cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance.
  • Identify appropriate contraceptive methods for women with chronic medical conditions.
  • Demonstrate key strategies for giving an HIV-negative result.
  • Discuss current guidelines for testing and retesting of gonorrhea and chlamydia infections.
